The gardens of the Fortress of the Christian Monarchs, one of Cordoba’s major landmarks, have been the scene of Thursday’s gala Cordobeses of the Year awards, with which Cordoba Journal recognizes the work of individuals and organizations that have excelled in 2013 by its social and business values.

This traditional event was presented once again by Cordoba’s journalist Jesus Vigorra and has been assisted by the Minister of Economy, Innovation, Science and Labour at the Andalusian Board, José Sánchez Maldonado; the mayor, Jose Antonio Nieto, and other authorities and personalities of political, social and cultural spheres.

The winners of the 29th edition of the awards, in the category of social values, are: Manuel Benítez El Cordobés, which last year celebrated the 50th anniversary of his “alternativa” to become a fully qualified bullfighter; Grouping of Cordoba’s Brotherhoods commemorating its 70-year history; Loyola Andalucía University, which is the first private university in the region and began its first course last year; Maimonides Institute for Biomedical Research of Cordoba, which develops its work in areas such as nutrition, aging and cancer; and Lourdes Mohedano gymnast, world champion in ten existing clubs.

In the business category, winners are Faasa Group, leader of aviation industry in Southern Europe and Chile; Rafael Carrillo, owner of the El Churrasco restaurant; and Silos Córdoba, which has been a European leader in the manufacture of silos and aims to become a reference as integrated solutions provider for grain handling, drying and storage.

The gala will be followed on Friday in a special program by Onda Mezquita, at 23.00 pm. today.
